Devin Rice paced Magoffin County with a game-high 19 points. Arnett added 17 points for the Hornets. Fletcher also reached double figures for visiting Magoffin County, finishing the regulation game with 14 points.
Prestonsburg enjoyed a comfortable lead over Magoffin County in the first half before the Hornets (3-0) fought back. The Blackcats led Magoffin County 18-5 at the end of the first quarter. Prestonsburg took a 25-23 lead into halftime, but was on the losing end of a 44-36 score at the end of the third quarter.
Bobby Hughes paced Prestonsburg with 17 points. Senior center Trevor Patton added 10 points, joining Hughes in double figures. Jordan Hall scored nine points, Mason Vance added seven in off of the bench, Taylor Clark netted three and Nathaniel Stephens had two for the Blackcats.
In another Magoffin County scoring, Tyler Hunley tossed in five points and Nathan Arnett added four. Dustin Minix connected on a free throw for the Hornets.
Prestonsburg, playing in its season-opener, featured a starting lineup with only one player with previous varsity basketball starting experience. Hughes was the only Blackcat starter who had started a game during the 2005-06 season. Hall, Clark, Patton and Stephens also started for the Blackcats.
Prestonsburg (0-1) will be back in action Friday, Dec. 15 when it hosts Shelby Valley.
