PHELPS - Phelps defended its homecourt in convincing fashion Tuesday night, turning back visiting Allen Central in a girls’ basketball game between two 15th Region counterparts. The Lady Hornets had three players reach double figures scoring and defeated the visiting Lady Rebels 62-43. Jasmine Hall paced Phelps with a team-high 18 points. Kayla Johnson scored 16 points and Taylor Keene added 15 points for the Lady Hornets. Phelps didn’t exactly get started on the right foot. The Lady Hornets only led Allen Central 22-17 at the half. When the first quarter drew to a close, the two teams were knotted at 5-5. Phelps, under the guidance of head coach Denise Campbell, broke the game open in the second half, scoring 20 points in each of the last two quarters. Six different players scored for each team. Sophomore center Gena McGuire added four points for the Lady Hornets. Chasity Wolford and Kayla McCarty added four points apiece for Phelps. Sara Johnson paced Allen Central with a game-high 19 points. Jessica Toole was another player in double figures for the Lady Rebels, adding 12 points. Liz Dingus contributed four points to the AC scoring effort. The loss was the third straight for Allen Central (1-7). Phelps, following the win, improved to 2-6.
