BELFRY – Senior Andrew Roberts scored a game-high 16 points and Dylan Meade added 15 points on Friday night as visiting Betsy Layne defeated Belfry 64-52.
Landon Hale accompanied Roberts and Meade in double figures, scoring 13 points for the Bobcats. Hale led Betsy Layne on the boards, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.
Betsy Layne won despite shooting only 38.6-percent (22-of-57) from the field. Betsy Layne was 4-of-18 from 3-point range.
The Bobcats fared better at the free throw line, draining 16-of-24 foul shots.
Undefeated Betsy Layne improved to 6-0. Belfry dropped to 0-3 following the loss.
Betsy Layne excelled early, outscoring Belfry 15-8 in the opening quarter. The Bobcats took a hard-fought 27-22 lead into halftime. Finishing strong, Betsy Layne owned a 37-30 scoring edge over Belfry in the second half.
Freshman guard/forward Peyton Case narrowly missed double figures, netting nine points for the Bobcats. Junior guard Garran Newsome scored five points, senior guard Cody Luster flipped in four and freshman forward/center Charles Daniels added two for the Betsy Layne squad.
Meade and Case rounded up seven rebounds apiece for the Bobcats in the winning effort.
Belfry shot 43.8-percent (21-of-48). The Pirates, however, connected on only 2-of-10 3-point field goal attempts while shooting just 50-percent (8-of-16) from the free throw line.
Belfry managed to outrebound Betsy Layne 32-29.
Four of Belfry’s six scorers reached double figures in the loss. Junior center/forward Tony Messer led Belfry with 13 points. Following closely behind, senior guard Gary Runyon added 11 points for the Pirates. Senior guard Nick Turner and junior guard Josh Robinson added 10 points apiece for Belfry in the setback.
Betsy Layne will host Allen Central on Friday, Dec. 23 for a 58th District/Floyd County Conference game.
