Lady Raiders oust P’burg from All ‘A’

PIKEVILLE – The South Floyd Lady Raiders eliminated Prestonsburg from the 15th Region All ‘A’ Classic on Saturday, defeating the Lady Blackcats 71-54 in the small school regional tournament’s opening round at the East Kentucky Expo Center.

South Floyd excelled offensively, shooting 55.1 percent (27-of-49) from the field. The Lady Raiders were 9-of-18 from 3-point range.

The Lady Raiders improved to 5-6 thanks to the win. South Floyd returned to the win column after suffering back-to-back losses.

Kiana Hall led South Floyd with a game-high 30 points. Hall 24 points in the second half, draining five 3-point field goals afetr intermission.

Ashley Castle had a double-double for the Lady Raiders. Castle scored 18 points and handed out 14 assists. The experienced senior also recorded six steals and registered six rebounds.

Gabrielle Bailey accompanied Hall and Castle in double figures, adding 10 points for the Lady Raiders. Finishing one shot short of reaching double figures, Kelsey Dye chipped in eight points for South Floyd in the winning effort.

South Floyd shot 66.7 percent (8 of 12) from the free throw line.

Brandi Stumbo and Branda Hamby rounded out the South Floyd scoring with four and two points, respectively.

The Lady Raiders controlled the boards, outrebounding Prestonsburg 29-23.

Through 11 games, South Floyd has made 62-of-231 3-point field goals. Hall leads the Lady Raiders in scoring with a 17.6 points per game average. Castle and Bailey are averaging 12.6 and 10.6 points per game, respectively. Dye is averaging 9.5 points per game for the Lady Raiders.

Prestonsburg shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the field in the loss. The Lady Blackcats were 6-of-15 (40 percent) from 3-point range.

Cassie Burchett led Prestonsburg, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Kristian Waugh scored a team-high 17 points for the Lady Blackcats.

Narrowly missing double figures, Caitlin Kidd chipped in nine points for the Prestonsburg girls.

Tiffany Meadows had six points, Catie Burchett four and Allison Hall two for Prestonsburg in the loss.

Catie Burchett also had six rebounds for Prestonsburg in the All ‘A’ Classic game.

As a team, Prestonsburg shot 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free throw line.

The 15th Region All ‘A’ Classic resumed on Monday at the Expo Center with Betsy Layne battling Phelps and Paintsville playing Pikeville in a pair of opening round matchups.
