Charles Dean “Snock” Bates, 72, of Wayland, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born April 22, 1939, to the late William Columbus “Dib” Bates and Celeste Hall Bates. He was the husband of Myrtle Johnson Bates. He was a retired coal miner.

He was preceded in death by one son, Teddy Bates; a brother, Shannon Bates; and a sister, Patty Jean Bates.

He is survived by one son, Dean (Brenda) Bates; two daughters, Patty (Gary) Perkin and Shela Maggard; special granddaughter, Kaley Marie Bates; brothers and sisters, Eddie “Bud” Bates, John Ellis Bates, James Bates, Charlsia Thornsberry, Aileen Orosz, Nancy Louise Thornsberry, Sharon Ann Blankenship and Joy M. Bates; and grandchildren, Larry Lee Hunter, Gary Michael Hunter, Weley Daniel Perkins, Michael Brandon Maynard and Sarah Elizabeth Perkins.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 26, at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home, with Cluett Hall officiating. Burial followed the service at the Bates Family Cemetery in Wayland.

Nelson Frazier Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
