Blackcats beat Magoffin in nine innings

PRESTONSBURG - Prestonsburg notched its second straight win on Tuesday evening, edging visiting Magoffin County 7-6 in nine innings at StoneCrest Park.
Junior pitcher Adam Griffith started on the mound for the Blackcats. The Prestonsburg starter registered nine strikeouts as part of a solid outing. Griffith pitched into the seventh inning before fellow junior Cody Chaffin came on to throw in a relief outing. Chaffin had four strikeouts.
John David Kazee started on the mound for the Hornets, pitching well against the Blackcats.
Prestonsburg improved to 11-6 after notching the win.
Magoffin County, which suffered its sixth straight loss, dropped to 7-10.
Less than two weeks ago, Prestonsburg edged Magoffin County 12-11 in the semifinals of the 15th Region All “A” Classic.
The Blackcats plated three runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning.
Regulation ended with the two teams tied 4-4. After a scoreless eighth inning, visiting Magoffin County across two runs in the top half of the ninth inning.
Magoffin County moved ahead early, scoring four runs in the top half of the second inning. The Hornets led 4-0 until Prestonsburg tied the game later in regulation. Prestonsburg scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Trey Stapleton led the Prestonsburg offense with three singles.
Bryson Williams scored a game-high three runs for the Blackcats. Williams, batting out of the second spot in the Prestonsburg order, delivered two singles.
Kazee was one of the leaders at the plate for Magoffin County, finishing with two singles and two runs.
Austin Whitaker had a double, a single, a walk and one run for the Hornets.
