HAGER HILL - Kent Rose was able to put his trademark sunglasses to good use on Saturday afternoon as the sun broke free from the clouds at Combs Airport. With the returning sunshine came the opening of the Arm Drop Drags.
Rose, whose face adorns Arm Drop Drags T-shirts, spent the morning helping to direct the efforts to keep the track dry. The task was particularly tough given the fact that rain, steady and even heavy at times, remained in the area. Rain only remained in the area until just after 2 p.m., though. Then, hopes of drag racing near the Floyd County line were once again alive. The sun hadn’t made its appearance Saturday until after Noon.
One day earlier, Rose faced the same battle as rain delayed the opening portion of the event Friday afternoon. He was determined to get the Arm Drop Drags underway Saturday afternoon.
“These people want to race and we’re going to race,” the enthusiastic Rose said.
Presenting sponsor Pop’s Chevrolet and dozens of businesses and individuals in Prestonsburg and Paintsville helped Rose’s arms drop on the second edition of the Arm Drop Drags. The first event of its kind in the area, the Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags, were held in September 2011.
Racers from numerous states outside of the Commonwealth have traveled to Combs Airport for the Arm Drop Drags.
The show is going on. They’re racing at Airport Combs. The Arm Drop Drags is scheduled to continue through Saturday night.
