PRESTONSBURG — Former Floyd County Teachers were remembered recently during an Floyd County Education Association luncheon.

Each year the Floyd County Education Association (FCEA) pays honor to those retired teachers who have died during the previous year with a program dedicated to their lives and how they influenced the lives of many children along the way. Fittingly, the program is done in the spring of the year.

This year’s Floyd County’s Deceased Retired Teachers included Homer L. Hall, Nannie Walters Hall, Charlene Sexton, Wendell L. Martin, Keith W. Slone, Hugo Eckner Miller, Carole Rice, Draxie Hamilton Newsome and Helen Gladys Matthew Jones.

During the program there was a candle lighting, receiving of proclamation and rose and eulogies for deceased members by family, colleagues and students. Other members of the association tell heartfelt stories of the teachers and it makes for a day that teachers are truly appreciated for the work they do for kids and the community. Sometimes the comments are heart-wrenching.

The site of this year event was the Josie Hoskins school which provided just the right atmosphere for such a service. The Josie Hoskins school is a one room facility that had the very minimum of equipment and supplies and yet managed to turn out people who went on to be of service to their families and communities.

Entertainment was provided by the East Wind Trio—Joan Chaffins, Trish Cieslak, and Libby Hall from the McDowell First Baptist Church. Joan and Libby are retired teachers themselves and know many of the people who are honored each year. These ladies have been providing the entertainment for many years at this function.

After the program everyone was treated to a lunch prepared by members of the FCEA, and more stories and memories were relived.

The FCEA will be having a meeting at 11 a.m., Sept. 6, at May Lodge, in Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. Lunch is provided for newly retired members.
