VIRGIE — A Pike County man was killed Sunday evening, after trying to cross four lanes of traffic on U.S. 23 near Caney.
According to Kentucky State Police, Post 9 in Pikeville received a call of a traffic accident on U.S. 23 in the Caney community of Pike County.
After a preliminary investigation, KSP troopers determined that 49-year-old Merl Adkins, of Virgie, was attempting the cross all four lanes of traffic when he was struck by a silver Hyundai Sonata traveling south on U.S. 23. After being struck, Adkins then wandered into the northbound lanes, where he was struck by two more vehicles.
Adkins was pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Coroner Russell Roberts.
According to KSP officials, an autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Monday. The accident remains under investigation by KSP Det. Chris Phillips and accident reconstructionist Trooper Bryan Layne.
