BETSY LAYNE - The Prestonsburg C-Team remained undefeated in Floyd County over the weekend. Prestonsburg defeated longtime rival Allen 12-2 at Betsy Layne on Saturday.
After a scorless first quarter, Prestonsburg’s Carter Akers set quarterback Carson Poe up for a 1-yard scoring run early in the second period. The Allen defense managed to turn back the Blackcats on the two point conversion attempt. The Eagles had a chance to score on a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard-line on the last play of the first half but Prestonsburg’s interior line stuffed a rush attempt in the backfield to send the Blackcats into halftime with a 6-0 lead.
Midway through the third quarter, Poe broke free on a 57-yard scoring run run to put the Blackcats up 12-0. Allen, stepping up defensively, stopped Prestonsburg’s second two-point conversion attempt.
With two minutes left in the game, Allen faced a fourth-and-goal from the 3 yard line. Blackcats Colby Fugate and Luke Hyden made a tackle to keep the Eagles from reaching the end zone. Avoiding a shutout, the Allen defense stepped up and tackled Poe in the end zone for a safety to set the final score.
Both Prestonsburg and Allen will return to regular-season competition at Allen Central on Saturday, Sept. 29.
