GRUNDY, Va. — Planning for a coal rally in Buchanan County in support of American coal jobs is continuing as the Oct. 21 event nears. Area residents will have an opportunity to show their support for coal at the rally to be held at Poplar Gap Park.

The afternoon event, which will run from 2 to 5 p.m. will feature entertainment by a country music headliner to be announced. Admission to the concert and the events of the day is free. Sponsors include Eastern Coal Council, FACES and Friends of Coal. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and or a blanket to enjoy the afternoon events.

“We are hoping to have a large turnout for this rally which we feel is a great opportunity for our friends and neighbors to join us in showing their support for American coal jobs and the people who work in our industry,” said Eastern Coal Council Director Barbara Altizer. “We are still finalizing entertainment and speakers for the day, but we hope folks have put the date on their calendars and will plan to join us at the park on Oct. 21.”

There will be plenty of good food, music, inflatable rides for the kids and remarks from a bi-partisan group of speakers. In addition to a free hot dog dinner, concessions will also be available for purchase from various non-profit groups and the sales at those booths will benefit those groups.

The rally is designed to focus awareness on the importance of coal in the economy on the local, regional, state and national levels.
