Bears drop home match to Rio Grande
by Times Staff Report
PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville volleyball team dropped three sets in a row at home on Monday evening to lose to the University of Rio Grande 3-0.
The Bears, which lost by scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-16, fall to 0-14 in the Mid-South Conference and 6-25 overall, while the Red Storm are now sitting pretty at 10-3 in the conference and 19-8 overall.
Senior Brittany Hodge led the Bears with 10 kills on the evening, and junior Stephanie Dounseroux continued to impress with 15 assists.
Unfortunately for the Bears faithful, Red Storm freshman Alex Phillips and senior Whitney Smith spent the evening inflicting damage up front with 12 of Rio Grande’s 25 kills while the athletic display of senior Lauren Raines helped Rio Grande in a stingy defensive team effort.
The Bears will return home on Friday night when Kentucky Christian University comes to call at the UPIKE Gym. The opening serve is set for 6 p.m.
