PRESTONSBURG — One contestant in the Prestonsburg City Council Race has dropped out after suffering a serious injury while training for a marathon.

Brent Graden, formerly the city’s director of economic development, withdrew his name from the Prestonsburg City Council race.

Graden says he just wanted to let people know why he had withdrawn from the race. “Many weeks back, I seriously injured my back and leg while training for a marathon and an Ironman. Just overworked it,” said Graden. “It has been very painful and would not allow me to go into the city and campaign the way you are supposed to. For me to just put my name on the ballot (is) not my style.”

Graden previously had some small success in his 2010 bid for county judge. He says that just because he or anyone else will not be on the council does not mean that they cannot contribute to making Prestonsburg a better place to live and work.

According to Graden, his name will actually appear on the ballot but the votes will not count towards him. “Please still take the time to vote for those candidates who you feel will be progressive and move this city in the right direction,” Graden says. “So please vote on Nov. 6.”
