PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville women’s bowling team participated in Bellarmine University’s Striking Knights Classic last weekend, where it finished second in the varsity division and recorded a 1/2 finish in the junior varsity classification.

The Bears came in with a nine-game total of 8517, which was second only to Lindenwood (Mo.) in the varsity draw. Bethel, Campbellsville and Bellarmine rounded out the top five.

Pikeville Black won the JV tournament with a score of 8438 while Orange was next at 8425. Had they been allowed to bowl in the open classification, the Pikeville teams would have finished second, third and fourth overall.

While none of the Pikeville bowlers rolled all nine games, they still finished well in the field. Senior Erica Anderson averaged 202.6 and came in 17th, while sophomore Brianna Larson was 22nd and averaged 196.2.

Among the junior varsity competitors, freshman Katelyn Simpson made the all-tournament team, finishing with a total of 1532 for eight games.

She was the first of five bowlers in the top 10. Freshmen Samantha Wilson and Tricia Kent had totals of 1463 and 1441, while juniors Alexis Voscovo and Rebekah Wilhelm had 1426 and 1368 despite bowling only seven games.

The Bears are off through the end of the semester now and will resume play in the Keystone Quaker Classic in Allentown, Penn., on Dec. 27-28.
