BETSY LAYNE - Christina Crase passed her first test as head coach of the Betsy Layne girls’ basketball team Monday night. In her debut as head coach, Crase guided the Ladycats into the win column as host Betsy Layne defeated visiting Paintsville 39-36 at the Dome.

The Ladycats overcame a three-point halftime deficit and survived an early offensive outburst from the Paintsville girls.

“Paintsville came out shooting first quarter hitting three threes - they were hitting a lot,” Crase commented. “We had to make some adjustments and make sure to get in the way of shooters after we were down three at halftime. We went into the locker room with only five rebounds. We had to get on the boards offensively and defensively. So, we came out second half with that mindset of rebounding and putting more pressure on the ball. We were able to get a few turnovers and more rebounds second half to make a run late for the win.”

Betsy Layne survived a sub-par offensive performance. The Ladycats were 11-of-48 from the field, connecting on only 22.9 percent of their attempts from two- and three-point range combined.

Betsy Layne fared well from three-point range, draining five-of-14 attempts taken beyond the arc.

The Ladycats shot 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the free throw line.

Timera Thacker led Betsy Layne with 16 points. Brandy Morrow and Paige Watkins followed, adding eight points apiece for the Ladycats.

Chloe Johnson scored four points and Bailey Recznik added three for the Betsy Layne girls’ basketball team in the non-district win.

Watkins led Betsy Layne on the boards, claiming six rebounds.

Kelsi Tackett grabbed three rebounds for the Ladycats.

Betsy Layne only committed eight turnovers in the opener. Offensively, Betsy Layne dished out seven assists.

The Ladycats used an impressive defensive effort that included nine steals, two blocks and 13 defensive rebounds.

Betsy Layne will visit Allen Central Friday night for a 58th District/Floyd County Conference game versus the Rebels. Tip-off for the Betsy Layne-Allen Central girls’ basketball game is set for 6 p.m. at J.E. Campbell Arena.
