Last month, about 100 elders and caregivers from Signature HealthCARE nursing homes, include Riverview Health Care and Prestonsburg Health Care, embarked on a vacation to Myrtle Beach, S.C., with one thing in mind — the adventure of a lifetime.
Elders and staff from Signature homes in Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida boarded charter buses early Monday and arrived that evening. The group left early Thursday with plenty of stories and even some first-time experiences, helicopter rides and parasailing among them. Other adventures included a sightseeing boat tour (no alligator sightings), a trip to Pirates Voyage dinner show, dinner and balloon animals at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurant, and plenty of sun and sand at the beach.
Philmon Mitchell and Billy Collier from Prestonsburg Health Care, and Francis Branham and Willie Shepherd from Riverview Health Care were among those who participated in the trip.
Mr. Mitchell had come to Prestonsburg Health Care for Physical Therapy, but liked it so much that he decided to stay. He had been to Myrtle Beach before, but it had been many years ago. He stated, “I Loved the beach and dancing with all the women!” Mr. Collier also came to the facility for rehabilitation. He had never been to Myrtle Beach and stated, “I enjoyed watching the mermaids at the Pirate Voyage Show.”
Lynn Watts, Administrator at Prestonsburg Health Care Center, who travelled with the group stated, “Our elders had a wonderful time. We hope these types of programs and trips will help everyone see that they can still live life to the fullest!”
Francis Branham has been at Riverview Health Care for over a year and is always ready for fun. She had been to Myrtle Beach many years ago and enjoyed the entire trip, and was quick to note that it was really funny when they got locked out of the room! Willie Shepherd came to Riverview for rehab. He stated he had travelled quite a bit as he is a musician, but had never been to the Beach and was excited to see what it was all about. Mr. Shepherd added he really enjoyed the dinner show and the beach.
“Quality of life for our elders is critically important,” stated Missy Allen, Administrator at Riverview Health Care, further adding, “Programming for both of our homes stresses the importance of staying connected to our community and helping and encourage everyone that they can continue to have a life worth living!”
