Allen Central knocks off perennial 58th District favorite Betsy Layne
EASTERN - The Allen Central Lady Rebels, under the guidance of first-year head coach Derrick Newsome, dethroned Betsy Layne atop the 58th District/Floyd County Conference Friday night. Allen Central’s victory over Betsy Layne snapped the Ladycats’ long winning streak in the 58th District/Floyd County Conference. Host Allen Central defeated Betsy Layne 59-54 at J.E. Campbell Arena.
Hannah MacElhose led the Allen Central offensive effort with 22 points. Sarah Rife joined MacElhose in double figures, finishing with 18 points.
Allen Central started fast, outscoring Betsy Layne 28-12 in the first period. The contest, however, turned into a game of runs as the Lady Rebels cling to a 37-34 lead at halftime.
Allen Central led 48-28 at the end of the third quarter.
Krista Parsons, Alyssa Moore and Deshea Elliott scored five points apiece for the Lady Rebels.
Allen Central, a 61-23 winner over Phelps in a season-opener on Tuesday, Nov. 27, moved to 2-0 after posting the win.
Betsy Layne dropped to 1-1 after suffering the loss.
Timera Thacker led Christina Crase-coached Betsy Layne with 16 points. Thacker was the only Betsy Layne scorer to reach double figures. T.J. Tackett and Chloe Johnson both finished one shot short of double figures, scoring eight points apiece.
Brandy Morris and Bailey Recznik scored seven points apiece for the Ladycats.
Paige Watkins scored six points and Kelsi Tackett tossed in two for the Betsy Layne girls’ basketball team.
Betsy Layne was 15-of-24 from the foul line in the district/conference game.
