Bobcats handle Highlands, Newsome nets 500th win

PIKEVILLE - Betsy Layne head coach Junior Newsome recorded his 500th win on Thursday as the Bobcats beat Highlands 42-35 in the opening round of the Pikeville Invitational Tournament.

With the win, Betsy Layne moved to 8-2.

Highlands slipped to 4-5 after suffering the loss.

Junior guard Dylan Meade paced Betsy Layne with a game-high 17 points. Meade was the only Betsy Layne scorer to reach double figures. Freshman guard Peyton Case scored eight points and senior guard Garran Newsome netted seven for for the Bobcats.

Highlands took a slim 19-18 lead into halftime. But the Bluebirds fell victim to a determined Betsy Layne team early in the second half.

Betsy Layne used an 11-2 run in the third quarter to regain the lead and work its way to the win. The Bobcats thrived throughout the third quarter.

Betsy Layne was seven-of-27 from 3-point range. The Bobcats canned 13-of-19 free throw attempts.

Lako Daniels chipped in four points and Dylan Hamilton and Dustin Rogers added three apiece for the Bobcats.

Betsy Layne grabbed 15 of its 19 rebounds on the defensive end. The Bobcats also registered 12 steals and three deflections.

Luke Turner led Highlands with 11 points. Bailey Witte joined Turner in double figures, adding 10 points for the Bluebirds.

In other opening round games in the Pikeville Invitational Tournament it was Breathitt County 58, Harlan County 56; Louisville Collegiate 80, Middlesboro 50 and Spencer County 72, Pikeville 69.
