Bobcats topple Piarist

MARTIN - After finishing runner-up to Louisville Collegiate in the Pikeville Invitational Tournament, Betsy Layne returned to the win column with an exclamation point Wednesday night. The Bobcats rolled past 58th District/Floyd County Conference counterpart Piarist School, defeating the host Knights 98-29.


The win was Betsy Layne’s 10th in the 2012-13 season, pushing the Bobcats to 10-3 overall. Betsy Layne improved to 4-1 in the 58th District.


The Bobcats flourished offensively in the early-2013 matchup versus Piarist. Betsy Layne shot 50 percent from the field, connecting on 42 of 84 attempts.


The Bobcats were seven-of-21 (33 percent) from 3-point range.


Betsy Layne, which grabbed 49 total rebounds, shot 66.7 percent (eight-of-12) from the free throw line.


Fourteen different Betsy Layne players broke into the scoring column. Peyton Case paced Betsy Layne with a game-high 18 points. Accompanying Case in double figures, Garran Newsome netted 13 points for the Bobcats.


Dalton Maldonado (eight points), Blake Rose (eight points), Dylan Hamilton (seven points), Lako Daniels (six points), Dalton Meade (six points), Aaron Rogers (six points), Dylan Meade (five points), Dustin Rogers (five points), Andrew Tackett (five points), Brandon Daniels (four points), Kory Stevens (three points) and JT Hall (two points) also provided scoring for the Bobcats.


Hamilton led Betsy Layne on the boards, grabbing eight rebounds. McKenzie Akers claimed seven rebounds for the Bobcats.


Defensive-minded Betsy Layne registered 21 steals and five deflections. The Bobcats also had 34 defensive rebounds.


Betsy Layne had 23 assists opposed to only seven turnovers.


In the girls’ game of a doubleheader, the Betsy Layne Ladycats defeated the Piarist girls’ basketball team 42-31.


The Bobcats will play South Floyd in the opening round of the 15th Region All “A” Classic Friday night at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
