PIPPA PASSES - Alice Lloyd College junior Ariel Nickell was named the KIAC women’s basketball player of the week by KIAC officials on Monday. This is her second player of the week award of the season.
The Eagles won their only contest this week defeating Indiana University Southeast 83-59. Nickell became the first Alice Lloyd player to register 30 points and 20 rebounds in a single game. She finished the game with 39 points and 21 rebounds. The junior forward shot 50 percent (10-of-20) from the field and 75 percent (3-of-4) from behind the 3-point line. She also made 80 percent (16-of-20) of her free-throw attempts. Nickell ranks 2nd in NAIA Division II points per game (24.33) and 2nd in rebounds per game (12.23).
Alice Lloyd College is currently 14-10 overall and 8-5 in conference play. The Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they host Asbury University.
Wise’s Boyce named MSC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week: UVa.-Wise junior Deon Boyce is the Mid-South Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.
The conference weekly award is Boyce’s second of the season and of his career. He also picked up the award on Jan. 14.
In his only game last week, Boyce scored 20 points and grabbed 24 rebounds to help the host Cavaliers to a 64-63 win over Bluefield.
The Jacksonville, N.C., forward finished one rebound shy of matching the Cavaliers’ program-record for rebounds in a single game. Boyce has the top-five rebounding efforts this season in the Mid-South, including reaching 24 boards three times and 23 rebounds once.
Boyce made seven of his nine shots from the field en route to his third 20-plus point performance of the season. Boyce has played in only eight games since joining the team in January.
In his eight games, Boyce is averaging 14.8 points and 17.8 rebounds per outing.
With its win, UVa.-Wise improved to 10-8 overall and 6-7 in the Mid-South Conference.
