Bears remain seventh in weekly poll
Times Staff Report
PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville Bears held their spot in this week’s poll, spending their second straight week at No. 7.
This after the Bears improved to 19-3 on the season with a 74-68 win over Bluefield College last Thursday night. The game against the Rams was the only one of the week for Kelly Wells’ club.
The poll’s release also means Thursday night’s game at Georgetown will be a Top 25 matchup, as the Tigers have re-entered the poll and are tied for 22nd this week. The Tigers, 17-5 and on a three-game win streak, are tied with Mid-America Nazarene (Kan.) this week.
The teams will hook up in Davis-Reid Alumni Gymnasium as the second game of a doubleheader Thursday night and are scheduled to tip at 8 p.m.
The Bears and Tigers are two of three Mid-South Conference ranked in the Top 25, with two others getting votes this week.
Lindsey Wilson, 21-2, lead the pack and are ranked third this week. The Blue Raiders have won seven straight and moved up one spot after Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) fell from third to fifth this week.
Columbia (Mo.) remains at the top of the poll, getting all 11 first-place votes with a 24-0 record. Lee (Tenn.) is still second with a 21-1 worksheet.
Lindsey Wilson is followed by John Brown (Ark.), 20-4, which moved up two places, and Lewis-Clark in the Top 5.
Pikeville is preceded by Westmont (Calif.) and followed by Cal State-San Marcos, Emmanuel (Ga.) and Oklahoma Baptist in the Top 10.
In addition to the three ranked teams, Shawnee State picked up enough votes to be tied for 28th, while Cumberlands, a former No. 1, is one of 10 teams in the receiving votes column.
The Patriots will face a tough test on Thursday as well when they host Lindsey Wilson at the O. Wayne Rollins Center in Williamsburg. Tip off is slated for 8 p.m.
In addition to their meeting with Georgetown, the Bears will visit St. Catharine College on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
