Messer among 17 EKU football signees

RICHMOND – Eastern Kentucky University head football coach Dean Hood announced on Wednesday that 17 student-athletes will join the Colonel program beginning this spring and next fall. The focus of the 2013 class was on defense as 10 of the 17 signees are expected to play on that side of the ball. Among the 17 signees was Belfry High School tight end Tony Messer, who signed with Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday.
The class includes six defensive linemen, two linebackers, two defensive backs, two offensive linemen, two tight ends, one wide receiver, one running back and one quarterback. The 2013 signing class comes from five states featuring nine players from the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
“We did a good job of getting guys in every spot that we lost [from 2012],” Hood said. “For the second year in a row, I thought we were outstanding in recruiting the Commonwealth – from east to west. We also needed a huge defensive line class because of the production we will lose at that position following the 2013 season.”
Eastern Kentucky is slated to return 12 of 22 starters (six on offense, six on defense) in 2013 including five all-conference players. EKU will kick off the 2013 schedule with a Thursday night home opener against Robert Morris on Aug. 29.
“We lost lots of production from our 2012 senior class, in fact eight all-conference players,” Hood said. “We will look to our returnees and key players who were redshirted last year for that production this coming year.”
Eastern Kentucky’s spring football game is scheduled for Saturday, April 20 at Roy Kidd Stadium beginning at 4 p.m.
