Members of UNITE along with local law enforcement and Communities Against Drug Addiction were present Wednesday as the new med pill box was brought into Prestonsburg city hall.

PRESTONSBURG — A coalition between UNITE and Communities Against Drug Addiction (CADA) has placed a new prescription receptacle in Prestonsburg City Hall for citizens to deposit unwanted or unused medications.

The newest of 32 located in the Fifth Congressional District where UNITE operates, there is now one located in each of the district’s counties.

“We’ve long learned that most kids’ first experience comes from parents’ medicine cabinets,” said Dan Smoot with UNITE. “So we’ve asked that people with unwanted or unused medicines come down here and dispose of them.”

According to Smoot, the drugs collected will be randomly incinerated in the “Dragon,” or used in participation with the Drug Enforcement Agencies “Take Back” day.

According to their website, UNITE has collected 257 lbs. of medication through its med pill boxes since Oct. 1.

The receptacle will be placed in the foyer of Prestonsburg City Hall. The box was purchased with grant funding through CADA.

CADA meets the third Tuesday of each month in the Floyd County Health Department. Next week’s meeting will feature guest speaker Linda Spurlock from Mountain Comprehensive Care Center.
