PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville spilt a doubleheader on Monday afternoon with Virginia Intermont, winning the opener 11-3 before falling in the nightcap. Virginia Intermont blanked the Bears 5-0 in the second game of the twinbill.
The games were originally set for Wednesday but were moved up 48 hours. The Bears also have juggled their series this weekend. The Indiana Wesleyan games will now be played on Thursday and Friday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
The Bears are now 3-6.
Virginia Intermont exited the doubleheader 4-1.
Game One: Cleanup hitter Corey Adams laced two doubles, drove in three and scored twice to power the Bears to an 11-3 win.
Catcher Sean Ryan drove in a pair of runs while his courtesy runner Adam Overbay scored twice. Right fielder Simon Beeson came off the bench and delivered a two-run double.
The top four spots in the lineup – Bryan Bradley, Adam Gumm, Erik Manning and Adams – scored two times each.
Starting pitcher Corey Gilligan went the first six to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs.
Game Two: The Bears managed four hits in dropping the second game 5-0.
Virginia Intermont scored three in the second and added single runs in the third and fourth to gain the split.
Brad Andrews had two of Pikeville’s four hits on the day. Manning doubled for the Bears while Gumm singled.
Junior Zach Sutherland led three pitchers to the hill for the Bears. He was the pitcher of record.
