BETSY LAYNE - Betsy Layne returned to the top in the 58th District on Friday night, defeating Prestonsburg 66-63 in the 58th District Tournament championship game at the Dome.
In a matchup where the two Floyd County boys’ high school basketball teams swapped leads in each quarter, Betsy Layne finished strong, outscoring Prestonsburg 17-12 in the final quarter.
Betsy Layne faced slim deficits at the end of both the second and third quarters.
Junior guard Dylan Meade led Betsy Layne with 14 points. Meade was one of five Betsy Layne scorers to reach double figures. Senior guard Garran Newsome and sophomore guards/forwards Peyton Case and Dustin Rogers added 11 points apiece for the Bobcats. Joining four teammates in double figures, junior forward/center Dylan Hamilton delivered 10 points for determined Betsy Layne.
The two teams were knotted 19-19 at the end of the opening quarter. Visiting Prestonsburg led 37-36 at halftime and took a 51-49 lead out of the third quarter.
Betsy Layne, however, wouldn’t be denied the district title on its home hardwood. The Bobcats’s 17-12 run in the final quarter included multiple defensive stops.
Lako Daniels, prior to fouling out, scored six points for the Bobcats. Dalton Meade added three points for Betsy Layne in the winning effort.
Senior guard Bryson Williams led Prestonsburg with 15 points. Sophomore guard Jarredd Jarrell and freshman forward Dalton Frasure followed closely behind, scoring 14 points apiece for the Blackcats.
Junior guard Aaron Foley added 10 points for Prestonsburg in the loss.
Jarrin Hall and B.J. Holiday rounded out the Prestonsburg scoring with six and two points, respectively.
Both Betsy Layne and Prestonsburg advanced to the 15th Region Tournament, which is being held at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.
