PIKEVILLE - Junior guard Dylan Meade drained eight 3-point field goals and scored a game-high 27 points, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Betsy Layne Bobcats to a win over 57th District runner-up Sheldon Clark in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament Tuesday. Three Sheldon Clark players reached double figures in the scoring column as the Cardinals defeated 58th District champion Betsy Layne 64-55.

Sheldon Clark improved to 20-10, advancing to the regional tournament’s semifinals.

Sophomore guard Chase Parsley and eighth-grade guard Dylan James paced Sheldon Clark with 18 points apiece. Senior guard Chase Kirk followed, scoring 16 points for the Cardinals. James and Kirk hit four 3-point field goals apiece for Sheldon Clark in the postseason victory.

Sheldon Clark shot 57.5 percent (23-of-40) from the field. The hot-shooting Sheldon Clark team was 10-of-22 from 3-point range.

Sheldon Clark, under the direction of first-year head coach Frankie Smith, produced 19 assists opposed to only eight turnovers.

The two teams swapped leads throughout the first half. Sheldon Clark edged Betsy Layne 9-8 in the opening quarter and led 30-29 at halftime.

The Bobcats endured more than one cold offensive stretch in the second half. Sheldon Clark added to its lead in after intermission, outscoring the Bobcats 13-9 in the third quarter.

The Cardinals used a balanced offensive attack to notch their 20th win.

Patrick Rice just missed double figures, scoring nine points for the Cardinals.

Mark Tiller, playing out of a reserve role late in the game, chipped in three points for region title contender Sheldon Clark.

Meade was the only Betsy Layne scorer to reach double figures. Lako Daniels netted nine points and Peyton Case contributed eight for the Bobcats.

Andrew Tackett (five points), Garran Newsome (two points), Dylan Hamilton (two points) and McKenzie Akers (two points) also provided scoring for the Bobcats.

Betsy Layne exited the 2012-13 season 19-10.
