Johnson honored; eight named all-academic

PIKEVILLE – One University of Pikeville women’s basketball player was honored for her play and eight other basketball players were recognized for excelling in the classroom at this week’s Mid-South Conference basketball tournament.

Callisha Johnson, a 5-9 junior from Shelbyville, Tenn., was named to the 12-player honorable mention all-conference list.

Johnson led the Bears in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game. She also averaged 2.2 points per game, shooting nearly 40 percent from the field and 70 percent from the line this season.

Johnson, a transfer from Motlow State Community College, had the four highest single-game point totals for a Bear this season, including a career-best 31 at Georgetown College on February 7.

Six of her women’s basketball teammates were named to the academic all-conference squad.

Those honored were Brogan Conley, a junior from Paintsville, who majors in business administration emphasizing accounting; Jennifer Grant, a senior from Ponce de Leon, Fla., majoring in business administration emphasizing accounting, management and sport management; Sydney Mason, a sophomore from Morrow, Ohio, who majors in English and pre-secondary education; Brittany Swindall, a junior from Pikeville who majors biology; Natalie Tunnell, a sophomore from Oklahoma City majoring in psychology; and Caitlin Wheeler, a junior from Buckhorn, majoring in criminal justice.

Two members of the men’s basketball team were named to the academic all-conference team. They were Chris Johnson, a senior from Newport News, Va., who majors in business administration emphasizing accounting; and Josh Whitaker, a junior from Hazard who majors in mathematics.
