PIKEVILLE – Jean Cocteau, a French artist, poet, playwright, filmmaker and novelist, shared that “True realism consists in revealing the surprising things which habit keeps covered and prevents us from seeing.”

Using great detail, art student Lauren Ross embraces everyday life and captures memories through her realistic art. Her senior art show is currently featured in the Weber Art Gallery at the University of Pikeville.

“My artwork has a definite feel of ‘me’ in it,” said Ross. “My preferred style of art is realism. Realistic, to me, means it looks as if it could be real life, or photographic. I like things to be technically or anatomically correct.”

The senior art show meets part of the exit requirement for a graduating art major and is a reflection of the students’ development and interests. Ross’ show features a variety of two dimensional works, including oil and acrylic paint, graphite, watercolor, oil and cloth quilts and photography. Three dimensional works including plaster, clay and gourd with acrylic are also included in the show.

“The chosen subjects of Lauren’s work come from a deep rooted love and personal historical connection for and with the subjects. And that connection clearly comes through to the viewer,” said Patricia Kowalok, professor of art. “An important element of Lauren’s work is craftsmanship. Whether she is creating jewelry or a painting or a cupcake, it matters to Lauren to make it to the highest standard she has imagined. Luckily, Lauren has the technical abilities to match those aspirations.”

Ross played women’s golf at UPike for two seasons. She is the daughter of Dianna Ross and the late Lee Ross, of Harold.

The art show will run through March 29. The community is cordially invited.
