PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville softball team split a doubleheader with Cumberlands on Saturday, falling in extra innings 2-1 and winning 9-5.
The splits raised the Bears to 2-2 in Mid-South Conference play and 2-5 overall this season. They are currently tied for fourth in the league.
In the opener, the Patriots tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and then won it in the eighth.
Sophomore Sarah Kinney, an Allen Central High School graduate, singled to score freshman Hollie Hinkle to put the Bears on top 1-0 in the top of the fifth. Hinkle had reached on a double.
But the Patriots, with their backs to the wall, responded in the final two at-bats.
Three other Bears singled in the loss. Junior Emily Castle, sophomore Kayla Brown and freshman Heather Maynard had hits.
Senior Kayla Morgan pitched 7-1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, striking out three and walking three.
In the nightcap the Bears broke open a 3-3 game with two in the sixth, and after allowing one in the bottom of the frame, put it away with four in the top of the seventh.
Castle had three hits and scored three in the win for the Bears. Kinney had three hits and drove one in, while Morgan had two hits, driving in two and scoring one.
Sophomore Brandi Jo Howard had a single and scored twice while Hinkle singled, driving in two and scoring one. Sophomore Jordyn Hale had a single and an RBI.
Senior Courtney Patrick pitched the first five innings for the win. She allowed seven hits and three runs, two of which were earned. Sophomore Sarah Williams threw the final two, striking out two.
