MOREHEAD – Morehead State Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson has been selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee and NCAA Football Issues Committee. He will serve a four-year appointment beginning in September.
Among its duties, the Football Championship Committee selects the field and bracket for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs.
Hutchinson has served as MSU’s director of athletics since 2004. He previously served on several NCAA committees, including the Division I Recruiting and Personnel Issues Cabinet, the FCS Midwest Regional Advisory Committee and the Division I Football Issues Committee. He has also served as chair of the Ohio Valley Conference Board of Directors of Athletics.
Under his leadership, the MSU athletic department has made significant strides in on-field/court success, student-athlete academic success, fundraising efforts and facility improvements.
He was instrumental in the department’s renovation of the former Wellness Center. The facility was recently converted into the state-of-the-art EAGLE Center for student-athlete services. The 7,000-square-foot center is on-par with BCS-level institutions in insuring student-athletes achieve their academic goals.
Hutchinson was also key in the department’s fundraising efforts and implementation of two Daktronics’ video boards in Johnson Arena. The project also included upgrades to video equipment and staffing.
Among the plethora of academic achievements gained during his tenure, the department has claimed seven OVC Institutional Academic Achievement Banners – the highest academic accolade for a conference school. Six programs have claimed individual sport team academic awards, and a significant group of student-athletes have been named either academic all-district or academic all-America.
MSU’s men’s basketball, volleyball, soccer, football and women’s golf teams have won conference championships during Hutchinson’s tenure as director of athletics.
During his time, he has helped lead facility improvements in nearly every aspect of the athletics master plan, including upgraded locker rooms for football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis and track and field. The athletic training room and strength and conditioning facilities were also completely refurbished. Offices in football and both basketball programs were refurbished, and a short-game facility was constructed at the University golf course, Eagle Trace.
New Astroturf GameDay Grass was installed at Jayne Stadium/Jacobs Field in 2009. Donor hospitality areas in the Academic-Athletic Center have been upgraded, and the department is in the fundraising stage for a new volleyball-only facility.
Prior to his appointment as director of athletics, he served as development director and director of development and marketing.
Prior to that, he served 18 months as a regional development officer for the University and six months as a staff assistant in the University’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations.
A 1996 graduate of Morehead State, Hutchinson earned a bachelor of business administration degree, while specializing in real estate. He earned his master’s degree from MSU in 2001.
