“John Dies at the End” — Horror meets comedy in this flick from Don Coscarelli (“Phantasm”) that pits two stoners against a demonic invasion. The story is related in flashbacks, through which we learn that a drug called “soy sauce” is all the rage. Our slacker heroes figure out that the drug offers an out-of-body experience, but the host who returns to the body isn’t the original and isn’t human. Fun stuff from the guy who brought you “Bubba Ho-Tep.”

“The Sweeney” — Britain’s best cops show gets the big screen treatment. The story focuses on ‘The Flying Squad.” These guys get some leeway in pursuing robbery gangs, but their leader, Regan, instigates a shootout in London that threatens the life of the team. He has to turn up something big and regain the trust of his superiors while engaging in fist fights, running gun battles, and very intense car chases. This is fun stuff. Ray Winstone steps in for the late John Thaw, as Regan. Damian Lewis (“Homeland”) is also on hand as the group’s stressed out boss.

“Route 66: Season 4” — The final season of the show about the “Mother Road” finds Tod Stiles finishing his adventures across the country alongside a new companion, Lincoln Case. You still get the awesome writing of Stirling Silliphant, but the show peters out with the absence of George Maharis, as Buzz. Martin Milner is still on hand as the intellectual Tod, but the personality of Glen Corbett’s Linc doesn’t offer the same dramatic vibe. The series does finish nicely, with Linc driving off in the show’s third star (a 1959 Corvette Stingray), while Stiles marries Barbara Eden and settles down.

“Meet the Fokkens” — Documentaries are often very serious, but this one will surprise you. It studies a pair of 69-year-old twins in Holland. They are a pleasant pair of ladies who dress in matching red outfits and happen to earn a living as prostitutes in Amsterdam’s “Red Light” district. Funny stuff that is also quite moving.
