Hazard man killed in Clay County wreck

MANCHESTER — A Hazard man was killed last week following a two vehicle collision near Manchester.


Ricky Summer, 44, of Hazard was airlifted from the scene to Saint Joseph Hospital of London where he was pronounced dead by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling.


According to Kentucky State Police, Post 11 received a report on Friday, May 3, at approximately 2:05 p.m., of a two-vehicle injury accident on the Hal Rogers Parkway, two miles west of Manchester, in Clay County.


During the investigation, Trooper Justin Oliver determined that a maroon, 2004 Chevrolet Impala was traveling east on the Hal Rogers Parkway when it crossed the centerline and struck the rear trailer wheels of a westbound coal truck.


The driver of the Impala, Sumner, was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the coal truck, Jackie Bowling, 54, of Manchester, was also wearing a seat belt and was uninjured.


No drug or alcohol usage was suspected by either driver.


Trooper Oliver is in charge of the investigation and was assisted by officers from the Kentucky State Police, the KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the Clay County EMS, the Manchester Fire Department, the Kentucky Department of Transportation and the Laurel County Coroner’s Office.
