HAGER HILL — It’s showtime for Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags Event Coordinator Kent Rose and all of “Arm Drop Nation.”
Months of building up what has become one of the top new drag racing events in the country will come to a head on Friday, when the 2013 Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags opens its gates at Paintsville-Prestonsburg Combs Field Airport.
Rose, busy with various setup duties on Thursday, was quick to voice his appreciation for the sunshine. The forecast is calling for some rain but Rose and everyone involved with staging the local drag racing event will do whatever possible to keep the event on schedule.
“The weather is great and the sun is shining on my old Kentucky home,” Rose said. “In case of rain, we’ll have several tents up and we’ve got additional lighting in place for this event, too. Everyone is urged to carpool and bring chairs. Bob White Construction came through with equipment to make additional parking possible. Anyone can bring umbrellas, also.”
The opening day of the 2013 Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags will feature Horsepower Hour from 6-7 p.m. During Horsepower Hour, drivers will drive their cars on a 21-mile trek around Dewey Lake and through downtown Prestonsburg. Fifty drivers will receive 2013 Horsepower Hour plaques.
Admission for the Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags is set at $10 per spectator; $15 per pit pass and $35 per racer. Kids 12 and under will be admitted free.
Coalminers who have lost their jobs will be able to race for free.
The Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags has added two classes - Front Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive. The first 250 racers to register for the event will receive driver bags and T-shirts.
Pig In A Poke will be the primary food vendor for the Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags, offering deep fried turkey legs, among other items.
Each class winner will receive $1,000. The second-place finisher in each class will receive $250.
Seven-foot trophies will be on the line for racers in the initial 2013 Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags event.
Lizard Lick Towing’s Bobby Brantley will be making an appearance at the Hillbilly Arm Drags Saturday. Speed TV personality Brett Wagner (Monster Garage) will appear both days at the drag racing event.
