Former MSU standout Murphy selected for KHSB Hall of Fame

MOREHEAD – Former Morehead State University women’s basketball standout Donna Murphy is set to be inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
The ceremony will take place on July 20 at the State Theatre in Elizabethtown.
Murphy was Kentucky’s first Miss Basketball in 1976 at Newport High School. A member of Morehead State’s Athletic Hall of Fame (inducted in 1990) and the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame (inducted 1989), Murphy held MSU’s career scoring record for 30 years.
Murphy scored 2,059 points and grabbed a school career-record 1,442 rebounds from 1976-80 and set 13 individual records. She led the Eagles to an Ohio Valley Conference in-season tournament championship in 1978-79.
Murphy was named to the All-Kentucky Women’s Intercollegiate Conference Team as a freshman and to the All-OVC First-Team the next three seasons. She earned OVC Player of the Year honors as a senior and was named OVC Female Athlete of the Year in 1980. She was selected as a regional All-American by Kodak on two occasions.
She also set an OVC record for the best rebounding average in a season when she corralled 17.4 boards per outing during the 1976-77 season.
Murphy coached collegiately at Kentucky, Florida, Memphis and Cincinnati and started the women’s program at Asbury University in 1991-92. She led AU for 11 seasons before moving into the high school ranks, serving as head coach at Lexington Christian Academy and Bryan Station.
