‘The Call’ — A 911 worker struggles to aid a kidnapped girl in this thriller. The idea that a kidnap victim can still call for help on her cell phone is the main wrinkle here that should delight thriller fans. A decent thriller eventually emerges here and the film gets a boost from Halle Berry, as the phone operator, and Abigail Breslin, as the victim.

‘The Incredible Burt Wonderstone’ — Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi star as a thinly disguised version of “Siegfried and Roy.” Basically, they are a veteran magic act finishing out their career in Las Vegas, while their personal relationship has deteriorated to the point where they hate each other’s guts. They are soon challenged by a popular street magician (Jim Carrey), who is amassing a loyal following that threatens to unseat the pair. This may sound like a must watch, but you’d do better to skip it and check out Carrey in “Kick Ass 2” instead.

‘Jack Taylor: Season 1’ — Iain Glen (“Game of Thrones”) stars in this fine adaptation of the “Taylor” mysteries, by Ken Bruen. Taylor is an ex-cop in Galway who is battling the bottle while dealing with a fractured home life and struggling to make a living as a private detective. Savage crimes seem to find this guy, and he has a talent for solving them, though at a great cost to his fragile sanity. Gritty and well acted.

‘Phantom’ — A Russian submarine captain engages in a battle of wits with a KGB agent in this excellent war thriller. Ed Harris does a fine job as the sub officer, who doesn’t trust the appearance of a KGB agent on board at the height of the Cold War. Orders take him to the Pacific and dangerously close to American waters when things start to go south as the Agent makes his move. David Duchovny is also good here as the crafty KGB man. A worthy addition to the “Crimson Tide” genre.
