HAZARD — For Melissa Stidham, the decision to pursue a remote-work customer service and sales job with the help of Kentucky Teleworks was an easy one.

A self-confessed “people person who loves to talk,” Stidham jumped at the chance for such a job. She also became one of the first employees to work full-time at the service’s new Teleworks Hub in Hazard.

Stidham is now employed by StarTek, a call-center, customer-service vendor for a major U.S. telephone, Internet and satellite TV provider, and said she couldn’t be happier.

“These kinds of jobs are the future of the workforce in Eastern Kentucky,” she said. “The pay and the benefits are great, and I love the fact that I got this opportunity and didn’t have to leave my hometown.”

Others looking to join Stidham can apply for customer service positions with StarTek at a series of Kentucky Teleworks job screenings in July coming to:

Hazard – Tuesday and Wednesday, July 9-10 – Kentucky Career Center Perry County JobSight (Teleworks Hub location), 412 Roy Campbell Drive

Prestonsburg – Thursday, July 11 – Kentucky Career Center, 686 North Lake Drive

Manchester – Friday, July 12 – Clay County JobSight at Daniel Boone Community Action Agency, 1535 Shamrock Road

All events will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at each location.

Applicants interested in being screened on-site at the events should bring a current resume, valid identification card, and Social Security card.

Successful candidates can choose to either telework from an office in their home or—like Stidham—at the Teleworks Hub located at the Kentucky Career Center Perry County JobSight in Hazard.

Jobs with StarTek feature:

• Fully paid training

• Medical, dental, vision and life insurance plans

• Paid holidays, paid overtime and paid time off

• Variety of work schedules

• Incentive pay programs

• Comfortable business casual dress and environment

• Employee referral bonus programs

• Flexible spending accounts for medical and dependent care

Eastern Kentuckians who were employed at former area call centers like Sykes Enterprises, ACS, and others are prime candidates for telework job opportunities with StarTek, said Kentucky Teleworks Director Joshua Ball.

Additionally, those selected for positions with StarTek from the July screenings could be hired and start training as soon as August.

“In the world of telework, it’s about bringing the people to the jobs instead of bringing the jobs to the people,” Ball said. “These jobs give those who worked in the customer service field the chance to once again utilize their skills right here in the region where they live, and with a very quick turnaround from their applying to potentially being hired.”

Applying through Kentucky Teleworks also gives applicants lacking high-speed Internet access or appropriate computer equipment for a home office the opportunity to be stationed at the Teleworks Hub in Hazard. There, teleworkers have access to all of those items in 44 workstations in 22 comfortable offices.

A service affiliated with the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP)—the region’s workforce development organization—Kentucky Teleworks identifies and develops valid work-from-home opportunities and helps people prepare for and land these jobs.

Through its website, www.kentuckyteleworks.com, jobseekers have access to thousands of additional vetted work-from-home jobs. In addition to StarTek, Kentuckians have landed jobs with well-known national companies like DirecTV, Apple, Amazon.com, T-Mobile, Comcast, JP Morgan Chase and others.

Melissa Stidham said she’s excited that more Eastern Kentuckians will join the ranks of StarTek through Kentucky Teleworks and its July job screening events.

“We have job opportunities we didn’t have before,” Stidham said. “You get a sense of confidence because you don’t have to leave your hometown to be a part of what’s becoming a thriving workforce.”
