The Big Sandy Area Community Action Program has additional funds thanks to the ARRA stimulus package, and part of the money has already been used to help weatherize homes.
Our agency received additional funding that will enable us to weatherize more homes, said Dwayne Davis, communication and information representative with Big Sandy Area Community Action Program. We can serve more people because of this increase in funds. Our goal is to complete 30 homes per month. We are currently expending over $109,000 monthly in ARRA funds on weatherizing homes, in addition to our regular weatherization funds.
With funding through the U.S. Department of Energy and the Kentucky Housing Corporation, BSACAP completed 151 homes in Floyd, Pike, Martin, Magoffin and Johnson counties. According to information from Big Sandy Area CAP, the agency hopes to complete even more homes since obtaining the additional funds through the stimulus package. The agency has utilized $327,000 over the past three months to weatherize homes.
One of the most recent projects, a home in Printer, received new skirting, flooring in several rooms, along with a new heat pump, floor insulation, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, window caulking and two new doors. The total cost of the Printer project was just under $5,500.
