Vernon Akers, 63, of Prestonsburg, husband of Brenda Sue McGuire Akers, died Dec. 11, 2012, at Paul B. Hall Medical Center.

Born Nov. 1, 1949, at Banner, to the late Burnis and Covia Hamilton Akers, he was a disabled coal truck driver. He was the step-son of Grace Marie Akers.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Veronica Brooke Akers Reed, of East Point; a son, David Wesley Akers, of Kentucky; a grandson, Hyden West Reed; two brothers, Revis “Buddy” Akers, of Fallsmere, Fla., and Joey Akers, of Banner; two sisters, Marie Damron, of Pikeville, and Emogene Marshall, of Martin; two step-brothers, Bobby Eugene Meade, of Lexington, and Michael Meade, of Vine Grove; and a step-sister, Ginny Ruth Meade, of Ashland.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Akers; a sister, Betty Lou Akers; and a step-sister, Zoe Ann Meade.

Funeral services for Vernon Akers will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 14, at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, with Paul Vernon Damron officiating. Burial will follow in the Burnis Akers Cemetery, at Banner.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.
